Pennsylvania requires annual
vehicle safety inspection to ensure vehicles are
maintained for safe operation.
In York County, and many
surrounding counties, the vehicle must pass emission
inspection before it can be safety inspected.
What must you
present to us?
-
Valid
registration card
-
Valid
insurance card
What is
included in safety inspection?
-
We will
not pretend to be all inclusive here. The rules and
regs are many dozens of pages long, but in summary,
we must inspect your vehicle and ensure that
the following items are functioning safely.
-
Lights, horn, wipers and washers
-
Tires
(tread must be above a certain spec and tire
must be deemed safe)
-
Brake
lining thickness (lining thickness specs depend
on the type of lining used)
-
Brake
hydraulic system (there cannot be any brake
fluid leaks and the brake pedal must be firm)
-
Emergency brake (must hold)
-
Exhaust (no leaks and any repairs must be done
in a “workman-like" manner)
-
Steering and suspension (no worn parts that make
the vehicle dangerous to drive)
-
Glass,
door operation, seat belt condition and
operation
-
Body
condition (no holes in floor or body that would
allow exhaust gases into the passenger
compartment)
-
Power
train mounts (steel and rubber mounts that
secure the engine and transmission to the
vehicle, cannot be torn)
-
Defroster operation (must blow air on
windshield)
-
Speedometer and Odometer operation (both must
operate)
What is
not included in safety inspection?
-
Let me
first say that whenever we are inspecting a vehicle,
we make a list of anything else we see that may
require attention. We feel you should be informed
of these items
-
But,
the following items (systems) are not part of
the state safety inspection:
-
Engine
oil and filter change
-
Engine
“tune-up”
-
Air
conditioning service
-
Checking the engine cooling system and
antifreeze protection
-
Checking belts and hoses
-
Checking the battery, starting and charging
systems
