Why replace rotors rather than machine?
When we machine rotors, we are grinding away metal from the rotor to try to get a smooth surface for the new brake pads to mesh against.
But for every thousandth of an inch we machine off, the rotor loses more of its ability to shed the tremendous heat generated in braking.
As a result, the thinner a rotor is, the more noise it will generate, and the more quickly it will warp, causing front brakes to pulsate.
Also, when the metal quality is such that it has rusted badly, the rotors will again rust in the same area, even after being machined.
Premium brake rotors versus economy brake rotors?
Premium rotors are thicker, they are made of a higher quality metal, they have more cooling fins to dissipate heat, and they are made to finer tolerances so they fit better. They are also more expensive, which is why we like to present you with options.
Premium Brake Pads versus Economy Brake Pads versus Ceramic
Brake Pads?
- Premium brake pads are made out of top
quality materials. They are good at delivering the
shortest braking distances that your vehicle can
deliver, resist fading under hard braking, and
offering the longest possible brake life. They can
sometime be noisy.
- Economy brake pads are made of softer
materials, wear more rapidly, deliver longer
stopping distances, will fade causing even longer
stopping distances under hard braking, and cause
brake dust which can accumulate on wheels and tires.
- Ceramic brake pads are made of premium
quality materials and produce less brake dust.
